Hello Karen, I'm sorry I have not met you yet. People have mentioned you to me for years now. I just watched "Blow the Candles Out" off Will's Facebook page. Just lovely. I've been recording in Austin since 1978, but seldom leave the studio. I hope I can make it to your show on June 13th. In any regard, I wanted you to know hwo much I enjoyed hearing your voice on one of my favorite songs. My best. - Gary Powell

Know, Karen, that you DEFINITELY play well in Peoria! My 91-year-old Mother and I truly enjoyed your concert tonight--you touched my soul with your true-to-life lyrics and will sing me home as I drive first to Midway Airport in Chicago, then from Raleigh to OIB. I'm hoping to find you some gigs in NC!!

Hi Karen...I am totally loving your Mercury's Wings CD...I met a friend of yours named Kim, in Atlanta last week. She is a friend of my sister...I am a musician and Kim thought I would like it, so gave me a copy. It was fun to see Chris Gage and Christine Albert played on the recording. My husband, Sam, played drums with Chris for a year in the early 80's , while he was still in So Dakota, so we know him and met Christine once, too. You are sooooo talented!!! I would love to hear you live, sometime!!! Female pickers rock...songwriters, too!

I've seen Karen just about every time she's come to the Tucson Folk Music Festival. I love the openness of her songs and lyrics...hope, love, don't get jaded. Great reminders for life. In going over the notes for the festival, I see that I've seen Karen as much as anybody else through the year. I was really impressed one year during the songwriter's circle with Karen's musicianship--how quickly she picked up on other people's songs and was able to play counterpoint and backup unrehearsed. In reading the web page notes, I see that she plays mandolin--it would be great to hear her do that some time. I also see that she's made several trips to Door County, WI. I have roots in Door County... small world. It would be a great place to listen to music--especially Karen's.

Karen, you have always been one of my favorite musicians and singers. For 20 years I've been coming to Door County ever since I met my wife. We came to any performance you were at when we visited the Door. We recently came back for our 20th anniversary and I saw a CD with your name on it. The memories just flew back. Just heard dark-eyed sailor. What a delight. A beatiful voice, very celtic sounding, and the accompaniment just right ... is that a special kind of flute in the back ground? I take it this is one of your onw compositions. It has a wonderful quality that makes it sound, in theme and tune, like a very old song (that's meant to be a compliment). thank you.

I watched the fire works this year from a cliff top over looking a little Navajo village with my little Sofie, maybe 3 little bottle rockets, but huggin my little lady so close. You were on the San Juan River at the same time, and on your return gave me the CD with "When I was three". When I listened to it that evening I knew you had written it for Sofie and me. I will sing it the rest of my life with that night in my eyes, and your wonderful gift of that song and that CD. Thanks Karen. ;-)

karen, it was great to see you backing so many musicians at Kerrville. I was there the second weekend and saw you at the New Folk concert and the main stage. My new love Sigrid and I will be at the Harmony House concert in August to see you, Ken and Wayne. You three make such a great combination. Listen, I'd really like to learn how to play "Beyond the Headlights" and I'm having some problems figuring out the chord structure. You said once when I talked to you that you would help me with this if I asked. I'm asking. Thanks.

I ran across your name on the Wylie House Concert Web page, while checking when my old friend, Dana Cooper would be playing there. I went to your website and really enjoyed listening to the selections that were available to hear. I still play and write music (used to play guitar with the Shake Russell Dana Cooper Band in the 80's). I love your music and voice. If I can, I hope to see you when you play in Wylie later in March. I bought your latest CD. I'm sure I will enjoy it. Anyway, keep doing what your doing, it sounds great!

Hi Karen -- I caught you briefly at the Ballad Tree at Kerrville this fall. My 8-year-old daughter still remembers some of the words to the song you sang there. I was touched by it too. We're excited to know that you will be at Uncle Calvin's in Dallas on Nov 4. I'm travelling in the Big Bend but will definitely return in time to catch you there and hear some more great lyrics and music! I think you're great.

Karen I heard you this am on a radio program called (?) "Tween the Tracks. Kcsn out of Los Angeles. I was moved by your incredible voice and guitar work. I am an amateur but love to sing and have always enjoyed beautiful and versatile women's voices. This is the first time I have contacted someone just to give a compliment, using the computer. I have a friend who hosts house concerts but she doesn't solicit. You can contact her at noblehouseconcerts@acn.net. Would love to hear you at a concert!!!!!

I wish you'd come back to the old Upper West Side to play and let us know when you do. I heard your version of Kate Rusby's "Courted a Sailor" on BBC3 and loved it. Funny youv'e got to listen to English radio to hear great American talent.

I'm just sending my love to you, my friend Karen, and congrats on getting picked for just about every festival's songwriter event out there, which is no surprise to me because you're so wonderful! I haven't called because I have had laryngitis for the past week, but I'm starting to be able to talk again. Ok, tmi, I guess, for your guestbook...

Karen, I work at ABIA, and I was able to watch a bit of your show earlier this week. Your music is just amazing, and being a Scot it's always a distint pleasure to be able to hear some Celtic music at the airport. It basically never happens.

I just read the lyrics to your song,"Mercury's Wings". I heard you perform this song tonight in Fish Creek and it reminded me of my brother Wayne. Wayne was 42 years old when he died this Jan. from Lymphoma. Wayne was my little brother and had five other brothers and five sisters. He died shortly after our Father died of Pancreatic Cancer. I have sent a link to your site and this song to all my brothers and sisters and expect them to be knocking down your door to get copies. Your music is inspiring and your lyrics are down to earth and pure at heart, You will go far.

Thanks for allowing me the pleasure of collaborating with you on "Dark Eyed Sailor" I still enjoy listening to those tracks we worked on in Vermont and N.J. and know people will appreciate the homage you have paid to those ancient songs of courtly love that really are the roots of much of the folk songwriting done today. Your interpretations are always tasteful and get to the heart of the material. You have a great gift and your work is always first class.

Karen: My wife and I saw you perform (our first time) today at the Camp Fire get-together in Alex Thomsen's backyard in Austin. We very much enjoyed your music, lyrics and you. We don't know how you and Nigel kept from melting in the heat (good thing there were no stage lights!). We enjoyed Nigel as well. We got one of your CD's and listened to it the rest of the evening, and we're looking forward to attending some of your future appearances in the area. You've got a couple of new fans!

Heard your song Take a Drive on WICN radio a few days ago, and as sometimes the case with radio the artist and song were not announced leading me to call the station for the info. I will now purchase Mercurys Wings either from a store near here ( not very likely) or order from Waterbug directly. At any rate that is one great song and I am hoping the rest of the work doesn't disppoint

Karen Mal is a sumptous musical feast. A sweet soulful musician and singer with a lilting expressive voice as pure as a summmer's mountain stream. She sang a brand new original song for me in the performers' tent after a recent show at the Tucson Folk Fest called "Suitcase Full of Memories" which simply floored me. I can see her achieving all her mystical musical dreams while creating many wonderous dreams for all of us fortunate enough to watch her creativity evolve and flow. I feel blessed to have met her, especially under such lovely circumstances. I am forever smitten. Rex Fowler/Aztec Two-Step

Hey Karen, we miss you, although your latest cd is very nice, hearing you live is a treat. Your intro to singing Mercurys wings makes us cry, then you sing, its fresh everytime we hear it. We're booked for camping in June and August in Peninsula as usaul, though not easy to do. So we'll send dates and maybe we'll get lucky and you might be around. I am going to give a local coffee house a listen to your cd, but I don't think the question is your music, it's more can they handle your quality.
